Collection includes letters, addressed primarily to his parents, written while he was serving with the United States Army Ambulance Service with the French Army in France during the first world war. Some letters were written after the war, while he was travelling in England. Collection also includes his diaries from the same period.

The United States Army Ambulance Service, also known as the USAAS, was created by presidential order May 18, 1917, for the duration of the "existing emergency." It incorporated the civilian volunteer units already in France: the American Field Service and the American Red Cross Ambulance Service. Col. Jones was the commanding officer; Lt. Col. Ingalls was born in Waukegan, Ill. in 1892 and was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1915.
